What is a Lawrence Habitat for Humanity Covenant
Church?
Covenant Churches are partners in the mission that God has given us --
Building adequate housing with God's families in need. Covenant
Churches promise support and they voluntarily join together in various
activities. We believe that we can come together in this mission under
a portion of our theologies that we all can share: that God does not
will for anyone to live in poverty housing and that we are called to
show God's love to families in need. You can read about the biblical
and spiritual principles of Habitat for Humanity in the Covenant Church
Library.
Covenant Churches agree to just
three commitments:
- Covenant Churches will pray for the work of
Lawrence Habitat for Humanity and Habitat for Humanity, worldwide. One
special part of this commitment is the Day of Prayer, observed the
third Sunday of each September.
- Covenant Churches will share their resources
for communication to help get out the word about Lawrence Habitat for
Humanity. This may include announcements in bulletins and newsletters
or from the pulpit.
- Covenant Churches will provide a liaison who
will participate in the Church Relations Committee and help implement
participation in the way most appropriate for the local congregation.
Having understood the
mission and the needs, many Covenant Churches participate regularly in
otherwise, as fits their own particular congregation:
- Construction crews. Many churches assemble a
crew once or twice a year to work at the site on a Saturday. Typically
they find that not only do that contribute to the construction of the
house, they find joy in working together.
- Lunches. Most churches know how important food
is in the life of the community and are well-equipped to meet an
important need: feeding the construction crew on Saturdays. Lunches are
often in short supply.
- Building on Faith construction projects. In
1998, 2003, 2005 and another in 2007 the majority of the covenant
churches joined together to fund and construct a house.
- MusicFest is a celebration of the community of
Habitat Covenant Churches in which the spectrum of sacred music in our
churches is shared. On a Sunday evening in February, musical ensembles
from various churches share music and join together for a mass choir
presentation.
- Day of Prayer. Internationally the Day of
Prayer for Habitat is held the third Sunday of September. Bulletin
inserts are provided for the churches that include a litany and some
prayer requests and items for thanks.
Churches in Douglas
County (and Jefferson County) are invited to join as Covenant Churches
with Lawrence Habitat for Humanity.
